La Caleta - Ancient Charm, Modern Luxury

Even now after the rapid property and tourism growth of recent years, Tenerife still has some hidden gems, La Caleta certainly fits into that category. Originally a small fishing village on the Costa Adeje, it has spawned a luxury resort development while still keeping the charm of the original village intact. Blessed with tranquillity and a largely unspoilt beach, it now has villas and apartments that are not just a sound long term investment, but also, a relaxing place to live, like Caleta Golf Resort.

Just west along the coast from the designer shops of Playa del Duque, just a mile from the 27 hole Costa Adeje golf course and still just a 20 minute drive from the south airport, La Caleta is where luxury homes rub shoulders with five star hotels.

The modern developments look out onto Playa de la Enramada, heralded by a mound that juts out into the sea and has been turned into a Mirador with the help of a spiral path and a viewing platform. The beach below is a rugged mix of rocks and shingle but large white sand areas have been added for sunbathing. One of those, El Chiringuito has a small bar amid the sun bed area, and for those craving that extra solitude, an anchored platform floating out at sea.

The end of the beach leads into the village of La Caleta and the small cove it is named after. The small winding streets follow the contours of the coast and the restaurants specialise in the fruits of the sea, with small intimate terraces where you can enjoy your fish. The cove has hardly any beach but large water smoothed slabs of rock separated by narrow channels invite sun worshipers and sturdy metal steps beckon swimmers into the sea.

If you fancy a walk through history and tradition, take a different route into La Caleta. Get a taxi, bus or car to El Porton on the slip road off from the TF 1 motorway, just down from Adeje town. The stone gateway leads downwards for about 2kms or an hour at a leisurely pace. As you pass the banana plantations on one side and the swirling patterns of old lava flows on the other, you will get a feel for the history of the area. There are several points of homage along the route, the first at La Tosca Colorada and later El Humilladero where a cross has been placed below the lip of an exposed outcrop of eroded rock.

The route is used, every second Sunday after Easter to carry the stature of the Virgin down to the church of San Sebastian and you will find this in a plaza near the end of the walk, along with the old original chapel.

Emerging on the border of Playa de Duque and La Caleta, you will be a short stroll away from the beach and the modern amenities that will draw you back to your own secret gem on this soothing and welcoming stretch of coast.
