Pepe Gancedo designed the original course in 1987 but in 2005 top Spanish player Manuel Pinero gave it a facelift, converting the Links into par 36 and making it the the full Championship Course it is today.
Each of the three courses offers its own particular set of challenges. In the North Course, the most attractive hole is HOLE 3, that runs along the “San Blas Ravine” and has the peak of Teide as its dramatic backdrop. HOLE 5 of the Links course which is a par 4 has a high position Tee which gives the player a fantastic view of the course and sea. And in the South, HOLE 2, par 3, is a favourite of many being fondly known as the “fried egg”, thanks to the volcanic sand which surrounds it.
Golf Del Sur hosted the Tenerife Open in 1989, 1992, 1993 and 1994 with José Maria Olazábal taking the crown in the first two events and David Gilford and Mark James being the victors in the subsequent years. In 1995, the Shell Wonderful World of Golf Tournament, was hosted at Golf Del Sur where Ernie Els and Phil Mickelson faced off in an exciting match of skill and experience. The Tenerife Ladies Open was hosted at Golf Del Sur in 2002 and 2007, the winners being Raquel Carriedo and Nikki Garret.
The stunning course, with its wide fairways and challenging water hazards makes the most of the dramatic natural features so artfully provided by Mother Nature, weaving round ravines and volcanic sand traps and dipping towards the sea. The edge of the course skirts along protected San Blas Ravine, a popular walk for hikers and bird watchers and the course itself, features a wide range of trees and plants popular with the local wildlife.
This partnership with the natural landscape and the indigenous flora and fauna which is encompassed and protected within the boundaries of the course is an essential part of the Golf Del Sur management ethos. So much so in fact, that Golf Del Sur was awarded the Madera Verde Diplome of Honour for the best environmentally friendly golf business in Spain in November 2007.
Golf del Sur is well equipped for the experienced or budding golfer. There is a Golf Academy and a very spacious practice range and to make sure you have all the latest clothes and equipment, there is a fully stocked golf shop.
The Golf Del Sur course is the centrepiece for Golf Del Sur itself, a residential and holiday village much favoured by golfers and their families. The location is very convenient, being just 10 minutes from the airport and 15 minutes from the tourist resorts of Los Cristianos and Las Americas. There are several hotels and self-catering apartments as well as many private holiday villas in the Golf Del Sur area which make a perfect base from which to launch a golfing holiday in Tenerife and the seaside town offers many diversions from horse-riding to lawn bowls – a bonus factor which allows keen golfers to concentrate on the ‘auld game’ while their families enjoy all the attractions of the neighbourhood.
