4M passengers passed through Fuerteventura’s airport during
2006. Over 300,000 were in the month of December alone.
Fuerteventura has been a popular package tourist holiday destination
since 1965 when the first hotel was built, followed by the construction
of the airport at El Mattoral, this meant the dawning of a new era for
the island economy.
Fuerteventura, with its 3,000 sunshine hours a year and 152 beaches
benefits from the summer Trade Winds and winter swells of the Atlantic
making this island a year-round surfers' paradise.
• Corralejo
Corralejo, Fuerteventura's largest resort, has an idyllic 11km beach,
located in the north, approximately 36 km from the airport, the original
fishing village is still the heart of the resort surrounded by tasteful
modern new developments.
• Baku waterpark
Relax along the lazy river, or if you're feeling more energetic, brave
the kamikaze, zig zag, wave pool or venture into the black hole. There
are kids pools and smaller slides for the little ones.
• Beach Life
152 stretches of white sand and translucent seas, many of which lie completely
deserted. The breeze makes the Atlantic waters ideal for windsurfing
and other water sports. The long rolling expanses of protected white
dunes that make up Corralejo National Park are an unofficial naturist
reserve with plenty of room to perfect your all over tan without being
disturbed.
• Food for thought
Fuerteventura also produces its own cheese made from goats' milk
called majorero – simply delicious! Try puchero, a thick
Canarian stew, and papas arrugadas, small, salted potatoes cooked
in their skins and
dipped in mojo, a sauce of parsley or red peppers mixed with oil
and garlic.
The majority of the shops, bars and restaurants are along the main street
which leads right down through the music square and on to the harbour
which looks across the opposite side of town and the sand dunes.
New Development
Ryanair has just commenced flying three times a week from Dublin
to Fuerteventura, a scheduled service that is proving very popular
to both visitors and
residents alike.
