Although Fuerteventura is
mainly known as a top surfing location with excellent wind and wave
conditions, it’s fast becoming a golfer’s paradise,
with some stunning top class courses, challenging wind conditions and
the perfect year round climate.
Golfing has become a major tourist attraction on the island and there
are now some very exclusive resorts here.
Some of the best courses include: Fuerteventura
Golf ,
Golf Resort Salinas de Antigua, Jandia Golf course, Las Playita Golf,
along with Mirador
de Lobos Golf and La Oliva Golf (set for completion in 2008).
Fuerteventura Golf
Fuerteventura golf was opened in 2002. It’s located in Caleta
de Fuste and was designed by Juan Catarimeau. In 2004 they held the
Spanish Open here, which raised the profile of Fuerteventura enormously.
It was broadcast on television to 600 million homes around the world.
It’s an 18-hole par 70 course, with massive greens and fairways
that stretch up to 50 metres wide…the views down to the Atlantic
are spectacular.
The course has 67 bunkers in total and several water hazards. It offers
both demanding and relatively easy holes.
Fuerteventura golf is set around some stunning
villas and apartments. At the back of the course,
there’s
the five star clubhouse of the Elba Palace Golf Resort Hotel. Located
on a height, it offers superb views down to the popular beach resort
of Caleta de Fuste.
The Salinas de Antigua Golf Club
Salinas de Antigua is composed of hills and dunes (that protect it
from the wind), impressive desert-areas and four beautiful lakes. To
play on this kind of course you’ll need to use not only your
technical ability but also your strategic ability.
It was designed by twice world champion Manuel Piñero and is
promoted by Ramiterra SL, of the Raminova Group.
Salinas de Antigua has 18 holes, par 70, with a maximum distance of
5,395 metres for men and 4,690 metres for women.
Jandia Golf Course
Located in the mountains in the south of the island, Jandia Golf Course
was the third golf course to be opened on Fuerteventura. It opened
just this year (2007).
It’s a par 72, covering a surface area of some 335,086 square
meters. It was designed by Ron Kirby.
Jandia Golf has a privileged location, nestled in a natural bowl in
the mountains surrounded by some of Fuerteventura’s most spectacular
natural scenery. The course itself has two small lakes, natural areas
and Canary Island palms.
It’s considered to be a medium to difficult course. It can be
quite a challenge even for experienced golfers, as it can get very
tight in places; but this all just adds to the fun!
Jandia is famous for its beautiful beaches (Playa de Cofete and Playa
Sotovento), which are just down the road from the course. Here you’ll
find massive stretches of fine white sand and crystal clear turquoise
waters that are perfect for swimming all year round.
The small fishing village of Morro Jable is just 5 kilometres away
from the course. The seafood here is amazing, some of the best on the
island. You’ll be spoilt for choice; it’s packed with traditional
Canarian restaurants. There’s also plenty of bars and leisure
facilities.
Las Playitas Golf and Spa Grand Resort
Probably one of the most outstanding features about this course is
the condition of the greens and fairways. They’re amazingly clean
and tidy - a credit to the hard working ground staff.
Las Playitas is an 18-hole par 70 golf course set amongst fuerteventura’s
undulating hills that lead down to the Atlantic Ocean. It can be quite
a tough challenge, as there are many water features and an exiting
mix of holes.
Close by is the town of Gran Tarajal and the very pretty bay of Las
Playitas.
Mirador Los Lobos Golf
Scheduled for completion in January 2008, Mirador
de Lobos is one of the most exclusive developments in Fuerteventura.
This high-class development consists of 150 high quality semi-detached
villas
and duplexes, surrounded by a private
golf course . Residents have their own private garden and an impressive
roof terrace with panoramic views, where they can bathe in Fuerteventura’s
year round sunshine.
