If
you are living in Tenerife, maybe even starting a business here, you may
have thought of aquiring your own dot es domain. Though it is possible,
Spain has one of the most restrictive registration policies of all the
countries in the European Union.
Spanish or foreign
nationals, which legally reside in Spain, can register a domain name
under ".es", which literally coincides with a commercial name
or trademark legally registered in the Oficina Española de Patentes y
Marcas (Spanish Office for Patents and Trademarks) or in the Office for
Harmonisation of the Internal Market, if it complies with the naming
rules.
Entities with their own legal personality constituted according to
Spanish Law, registered in the corresponding Spanish Register, can also
register a domain name under ".es"
Likewise the first branch of a foreign organisation legally constituted,
duly registered in the Central Business Register, can receive assignment
of a regular domain name.
However:
Only one .es can be
registered per company.
Generic names are not
allowed. For example Ferreteria.es would be against the rules though
Carlosferreteria.es would not.
Placenames are not
allowed, e.g. Madrid.es would be a no-no.
Registering a .es
through the ES-NIC will cost you €72,12
euros for the first year and €48,08 euros per year for renewal.
