Remember
if you park illegally the car will be towed away by the Grua. The cost
of getting the car from the compound is your responsibility. Not
of the car hire company.
Park
in a safe place. Use underground car parks or official car parks.
If
your car breaks down it cannot, by law, be towed by another car. You
must use the Gruas.
If
you are unfortunate enough to have a puncture, and are capable of
changing the wheel yourself, remember to use the red
triangles. One must be placed 100-150 meters behind the car, the
other red triangle must be 100-150 meters in front of the car but on the opposite side of the road.
This is so traffic from the other side of the road is made aware of the
coming danger.
If like me you always have children in the car it's impossible to even
attempt to loosen the nuts, then use the red
triangles. Either call someone to come and change the tyre for you, or
call the Gruas.
Driving Safely
Ok,
so you've selected a car hire company and hired your car for the duration of your
holiday in Tenerife. What are you going to do now?
For
starters, remember to get into the driver's seat. The driver is on the left in
Tenerife. Before you get your passengers in the car, especially if you have young
children, check to see how hot the upholstery on the car seats is. If the car has been standing in the sun the fabric may be hot
on the back of their legs. It might be a good idea to invest a few Euros
on a windscreen reflector/cover. Also watch how hot the steering wheel
is.
Tips
Remember
your interior mirror is on your right not on your left.
You
have to change gears with your right hand.
When
you go round a roundabout you have to go anticlockwise.
Traffic
lights go from red/amber together straight to green.
The
speed limit on the autopista/motorway is 120kmp.
Remember
to keep to the speed limit that is shown wherever you are driving. Radar
traps are very common here. If you are driving along and notice a number of cars
coming towards you giving a quick flash of their headlights, they are giving a
sneaky forewarning of speed traps ahead.
If
stopped by the police for any reason, always be polite and courteous.
If
stopped you will be asked to produce:
- Your passport, NIE or
residencia.
- Car papers that the
car hire firm gave you.
- If you own the car,
the ownership papers.
The
police do not allow you time to produce papers later at the police
station, so make sure you carry all your documentation with you.
Parking
Tenerife is very like your hometown, plenty of cars and not enough
parking places. Once
you get to your destination you will require a parking place. The
best advice is to look for the underground parking. There are many
underground garages/parking, and they are not expensive. Also your car
is kept nice and cool.
