Things to do in Tenerife - Bob Diving
At
only five foot nothing in my socks, however much I would
like to try it, Bob Diving is not for me. The Bob scooters do not
come hobbit-sized and so instead I recruited my strapping young nephew,
Robert, to take a Bob for a spin.
For three days after his experience all we could get out of him were the words, 'Amazing!', 'Awesome!' and 'Fab!'. Finally after much bullying and cajoling Robert did get round to telling us a bit more about his experience and you can read all about it below.
One Boy and His Bob
I did one of the most extraordinary activities in the world or Europe at least. Bob (Breathing Observation Bubble) Diving. It was one of the most brilliant experiences I have ever had.
It all started in Puerto Colon where I boarded a boat full of people and six Bob Scooters.Once on the boat it was about a 20 minute ride to the location where the anchor was dropped and we were shown how to operate the scooters - a button to go forwards and handlebars to steer.
We had changed into wetsuits ready for our meeting with the fish. Changing into the wetsuits was a friendly undertaking with every one helping each other to get prepared.. Whilst this was happening, the scooters were getting prepped for their second voyage of the day with the aid of a specially made crane at the back of the boat.
Once everything was checked we jumped into the sea ready to perform the specialized manouvre to mount the scooter. Instructorsthen took us down to our scooters which descend to a maximum depth of 5 meters.
Once down it was not long before we met the first of the fish. I felt a great sensation of peace and solitude as the fish came to feed out of my hand - at one with the sea and the life within it. The tranquility of my experience underwater was a sensation that some people (especially parents) can only dream of. The only noise was the sound of fresh air bubbling into the Bob's bubble and the hum of the propulasion motor.
The all round visibility was remarkable and gave me the ability to see distant objects and dozens of fish which were attracted to the small pot of food the guides had handed around. They swam so close and were so tame we were able to touch and stroke the fish as they fed out of our hands.
When our time was up, we were reluctantly led back to the boat and extracted from out Bobs. Clambering aboard the boat we peeled off our wetsuits while the divers regained control of the Bobs and hoicked them aboard the boat ready for our trip back to the noisy world that we had come from.
All in all it was a fabulous trip and I enjoyed every second of it. I would recommend it to anyone - as long as they are a bit taller than my Aunt of course.
