Though nowhere near as lively as Las Americas and Los Cristianos, Costa
Del Silencio has a wide range of bars. Because it costs so much to change
the name of a bar, you'll see the same bars staying open year after year,
though the ownership may well have changed hands.
With the blistering speed at which bars change hands, new places open
and older ones close temporarily or forever, it would be impossible for
me to attempt a comprehensive list of bars in Costa Del Silencio.
Instead here are a few suggestions of watering dens in the neighbourhood
with a preference to those bars that are kid-friendly.
Flicks
Seafront, Amarillo Bay,
Costa Del Silencio
Tenerife
Tel: 922 786 248
Full daily menu and
nightly cabaret. A very popular destination for residents and tourists
for the Sunday afternoon show. There is a large area in front of the
bar, leading down to the sea. Service is non-existant in the daytime
- go to the bar and get your own. Personally I find this bar a bit 'cliquey'
and would not include it here at all if it were not for its proximity
to the sea and the view towards yellow mountain.
Stella's
Coral Mar
Costa Del Silencio
Friendly bar offering good food at good prices. Stella
makes the best fresh, fat chips on the island - none of that frozen in
a bag nonsense.
El Penalty
Coral Mar (up the side of Netto supermarket)
Both these bars are new with El Penalty opening a few months before
Murphy's. El Penalty is a family bar run by a young couple. Though there
is no menu the owners are constantly plying their customers with titbits
and lollipops and sweeties for the kids.
Bar Trebol
This place has been open for donkeys years. The owner also runs a very
popular restaurant in the back. This is where you can pick up your lottery
tickets for the Friday Euromillions (though the lottery shop opposite
the police station in Las Galletas seems to have had more winners).
Las Galletas
Marazul
This is one of Las Galletas old standys, ticking along
for years. It makes very nice coffee and has a menu which includes snacks
like toasted sandwiches and boccadillos as well as full plates of simple
fare like escalope or beefsteak. The outside tables are popular but if
you choose to sit outside when the main waiter is on be prepared to wait.
Pleasant and friendly as he is, he can be a bit 'spacey' at times. He
is quite likely to forget your order alto gether so catch his eye as
often as you can.
Belgian Bakery
Not a bar or cafe as such but a nice tip anyway. Many
expats bemoan the Spanish bread here. It has a sweeter taste than they
are used to and does not go well with savoury fillings. The Belgian Bakery
just to the left of Marazul, towards the school, past the little stationers
does great bread and rolls. If you fancy some large, crispy fresh rolls
or soft baps this is the place but go early as they often sell out.
La Gramola
Find this nicely decorated little bar next to Tu Chance,
the second hand shop in Las Galletas. It does not do much in the way of food
but the owners are friendly and cheery and you'll almost always find some
local expats chatting at the bar or round the outside tables.
Tutti Frutti
Though this is the name on the wall of the bar, this cafe
will always be 'Alejandra's' to us thanks to the warm welcome we always
receive from the waitress there. Opposite the park in Las Galletas which
is currently being renovated Tutti Frutti is also just down from the
collegio which makes it ideal for parents waiting on kids coming out
or to grab a quick lunch with the kids.
Alejandra's pizzas are excellent,
thin, crisp base with a tasty and juicy topping. - go for the actual
pizzas from the menu though not by 'troza' by slice which is deeper
based and nowhere near as good. If you are a fan of fluffy omelettes,
don't miss Alejandra's tortillas and if tea is your tipple of choice,
you can select from a wide range of specialty teas like mint
and fruit of the forest.
Zebra
On the street down from Tutti Frutti you'll find
several bars including the exoticly decorated Zebra. This cafe bar
is slightly more expensive than the others but they do lovely crepes
and
the outdoor
tables
are shaded
which is always nice in summer.
Bohemia
Just down from the Caja Canaria bank and the pet shop on
the other side is this newly bought out and redecorated bar/restaurant.
Last time we went there they were really just settling in and working
on their regular menu. Some items were therefore unavailable but the
spinach gratinee, stuffed mushrooms and house paella we chose were all
excellent.
Gianduia
On the seafront but further to the left of the main promenade
(if you were facing the sea) this is a little pizzeria which just happens
to have a great position. Parents can relax while the kids play about
on the stoney beach finding 'treasures' and there is a cold water shower
right there to hose them down afterwards. Pizzas and pasta are good.
Atlantido
If you want a place to sit right on actual sand in Las
Galletas (again great for the kids to have a play while you chill out)
then this is the only one in the town. Find it right at the starting
corner of the main promenade opposite the tourist information centre.
Lovely service but dishes seem expensive here - a nice place for a special
evening
meal
perhaps
but
overly pricey for a daytime snack.
