Chemists
Chemists are usually open from 09.00 to 13.00 and from 16.00
to 20.00 (Monday to Friday) and from 09.00 to 13.00 Saturdays.
However outside these hours, a Farmacia de Guardia is
on duty in each region of the island, and a list should be
displayed prominently in all chemists windows or telephone
922 248 24 24 for your nearest duty chemist.
Chemist shops in Tenerife normally stock the range of items
that you would expect to find in the U.K. they also frequently
sell - over the counter – several drugs including antibiotics
that in Britain would only be available on prescription |

Note: In the Las Galletas/Costa
Del Silencio area, we recommend the chemist in Chapparal over
the one in Galletas. The chemist in Las Galletas (opposite
Caja Canaria) is always busy and the attendants seem more stressed
and less caring. The chemist in Chapparal on the other hand
is extrememly sympathetic and helpful. |

Drinking |
Compared to the UK, the measure of alcohol you
get in your G & T here would stun a carthorse. If you fancy
remembering your night out the next day, you might want to
ask for your drink plus an extra glass and extra bottle of
mixer.
That way you can divide the lethal dosage into two separate
glasses. Should you feel like ignoring this crumb of wisdom,
you can always
visit one of the chemists above and ask for a pack of Efferalgan,
the morning after the night before. |
Emergency
For all emergency services
in Tenerife dial 112.
Operators can take your call in English, German and French. |
Supermarkets
Nowadays you'll find more supermarkets that don't close their
doors between 1.30 and 4 pm which is a relief as the ghost-town
siesta hours were never something that I could get used to. Many
small outlets still do shut up shop though - even those that
cater to tourists.
If you are staying in a holiday complex I can guarantee you
will be cheaper not to use the onsite market. By all
means get the essentials there on the day you arrive, but in
a self-catering apartment, you would be better to stock up for
the duration at one of the big local supermarkets like Mercadona,
Hyper Trebol or Hiperdino.
You'll find that the supermarkets stock a wide range of familiar
items but if you are absolutely craving scotch pies or a particular
British brand of baby food there are small British markets dotted
around in most tourist areas. Failing that, take a trip to Iceland
in Las Chafiras and you'll be able to find any UK product you
are after. (Though why you are not eating paella and tapas in
the local bars while on holiday is beyond me). |
Taxis
There is a taxi stand outside Arrivals at Reinia Sofia.
Approximate prices:
Los Cristianos/Las Americas: €16-€20
Santa Cruz: €52-€55
Los Gigantes: €38-€40
You will receive a surcharge for extra luggage and if travelling
at night or on a public holiday. |

Don't do it! If a
tout approaches you waving a scratch card and asking if you
speak English just say Niet! and walk on by. That is unless
you fancy spending a whole morning of your hard-earned holiday
being pressurised into buying something you didn't want in
the first place. |
