Tenerife State School

Documentation required for application to a state school

My own two kids go to state school here in Tenerife and so far I am very happy with the education they have received. Should you be considering sending your kids to Spanish school here is a list of documentation required.

First ask the local state school for application forms. This will be about April or May and the forms and information you will receive prior to applying to have your child enrolled are all in Spanish.

  • Present the form together with a photocopy
  • Applying to more than one state schools may be motivation to have your applications cancelled.
  • Falsifying information on the form will result in the cancellation of your application and the loss of rights to reapply.
  • Insufficient information will not be assessed.

1. Domicilio (Proof of Residence): supply one of the following:

  • A photocopy of the NIE of the child or his parents, to be compared with the original by the school office.
  • Certificate of residence, in which the present residence is evident.
  • Certificate of Empadronamiento (Census certificate from the town hall).
  • Census cards of the parents
  • Labour contract or social security slips or photocopies which include the telephone number of the workplace. If parents live seperately, then you must indicate which of the parents have legal custody.

Clearly, that is a lot of paperwork. Remember that you need provide only one of the above – most likely your NIE papers.

2. Declaration de la Renta:
Tax declaration corresponding with the last fiscal year.

3. Photocopy of the Libro de Familia (family book) or Partida de Nacimiento (birth certificate), accompanied with the original.

4. Vaccination card or medical certificate.
(In order to get the medical certificate you can buy a form called Certificado Medico from any stationers and take it with you when you see the doctor. She or he will stamp and sign it as well as making any notes about your child´s existing health that he feels the school should know.)

5. Photocopy of the child´s Social Security card or papers.

6. Two photographs of the child (passport size)

  • You will be given the option whether or not you want your child to receive religious education.
  • In order to apply, you should find out from your local state school when you can pick up the application form. Pay attention to the dates on the form as it will tell you when you must return it together with all documents. It will also tell you when you can go to see the provisional and definitive enrollment lists.
