Spanish Cafe – Everybody Loves a Winner

Well that’s it all over bar the shouting. At the end of every World Cup there are winners and there are losers. For the winners, there is adulation, champagne and groupies galore. For the losers, a frosty reception and a post-match, post-mortum that probably left blood on the floor.

But just imagine the reception the conquering heroes will get when their toes touch the tarmac. Whooooeeee. Everyone wants a piece of those boys. They are heroes, every one. Viva España!

Joseph Jacques Césaire Joffre knows all about victory. He was a French General during WWI and is best known for defeating the Germans at the First Battle of Marne. (Thank you Wikipedia).

His greatest moment was regrouping the retreating allied armies and getting them to return to the fray quite likely by shouting this at them:

La victoria tiene cien padres y la derrota es huérfana

Yes indeed. Everybody loves a winner.

Derrota means defeat or rout and a huérfana is an orphan.
